Meta faces doubts over massive AI investments

AI spending concerns weigh on Meta after earnings report

Meta’s ambitious artificial intelligence strategy failed to fully reassure Wall Street after the company released its second-quarter earnings, sending shares lower despite CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s optimistic vision for the future of AI.

Meta shares dropped nearly 8% after the company reported weaker-than-expected earnings. The company posted earnings of $6.18 per share, below Wall Street expectations of $7.14 per share, according to Bloomberg consensus estimates.

Revenue, however, exceeded forecasts, reaching $60.8 billion compared with analyst expectations of $60.23 billion.

Zuckerberg promotes a positive vision for AI

Before the earnings report, Mark Zuckerberg increased his efforts to highlight the potential benefits of artificial intelligence. In an opinion article published by The Wall Street Journal, the Meta CEO described a future where everyone has access to advanced AI systems.

Zuckerberg argued that widespread access to powerful AI tools could improve efficiency and create a more balanced society. He also promoted Meta’s approach of developing more open and decentralized AI systems rather than relying only on centralized models.

However, the positive messaging did little to reduce investor concerns about the company’s increasing AI expenses and the uncertainty around future returns.

Investors question Meta’s rising AI costs

The main concern among investors is the scale of Meta’s investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Meta CFO Susan Li said the company recorded $2.4 billion in charges related to legal proceedings during the second quarter, increasing its expected full-year expenses to between $165 billion and $169 billion.

The company also raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $130 billion and $145 billion, up from the previous range of $125 billion to $145 billion.

A significant portion of this spending is dedicated to AI infrastructure, including data centers, computing capacity and advanced technologies needed to compete in the artificial intelligence race.

Meta must prove AI investments will pay off

Zuckerberg’s increased focus on AI reflects Meta’s need to convince investors that its massive spending will generate long-term returns.

Major technology companies have been increasing investments in AI infrastructure, putting pressure on free cash flow and raising questions about whether current spending levels will translate into sustainable revenue growth.

Meta has struggled to develop an AI model that directly rivals leading systems from OpenAI and Anthropic. The company is exploring additional ways to monetize its investments, including potentially offering AI computing services through the cloud.

Meta’s vision for personalized AI

Zuckerberg has promoted the idea of personalized artificial intelligence, where every user could have an AI assistant tailored to their individual needs, interests and preferences.

However, experts have raised concerns that this approach could require users to share even more personal information with Meta, increasing scrutiny around privacy and data collection practices.

Mike Proulx, vice president and research director at Forrester Research, said Meta may be attempting to advance too many initiatives at once, including AI tools, smart glasses, AI-generated advertising and new safety measures.

Regulatory challenges remain a major risk

Beyond concerns about AI profitability, Meta continues to face regulatory pressure and legal challenges related to its social media platforms.

The company is facing thousands of lawsuits alleging that its products contribute to harmful effects on children. The cases have been brought by families, school districts and state attorneys general.

These legal challenges also create financial risks. Meta has already faced unfavorable rulings in some cases involving alleged harm to minors and could face additional costs as litigation continues.

Building trust in the AI era

While Zuckerberg aims to position Meta as a leader in open and accessible artificial intelligence, analysts believe the company must overcome significant trust challenges.

Concerns around privacy, child safety, AI-generated advertising and data usage could make it more difficult for Meta to establish credibility as the technology industry enters a new AI-driven era.
