Bezos-backed space company plans major raise

Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, is reportedly preparing to raise $10 billion in new capital at a $130 billion pre-money valuation. The round would include Coatue Asset Management, Bezos himself and other large investors.

Coatue and Bezos expected to anchor the round

Coatue is expected to contribute about $4 billion, while Bezos is said to be investing $2 billion. The remaining capital would come from other major backers. If completed, the financing would mark Blue Origin’s first external fundraising round.

Funding follows New Glenn setback

The planned raise comes after a significant setback for Blue Origin. Its flagship New Glenn rocket exploded during testing in late May while being prepared for its fourth launch. As of last week, the company had not yet identified the cause of the explosion.

New Glenn remains central to the strategy

Despite the failure, Blue Origin still plans to use New Glenn for launches later this year. The company also needs to rebuild its launchpad in Cape Canaveral, which is currently the only pad capable of supporting the rocket. New Glenn is considered one of the most powerful launch vehicles in operation today.

NASA Artemis missions become the priority

Getting New Glenn operational is a top priority for Blue Origin as the company refocuses its work around NASA’s Artemis missions to the moon. The rocket is seen as a key part of Blue Origin’s broader effort to strengthen its role in future lunar infrastructure and deep-space operations.

Space data centers enter the picture

Blue Origin is also pursuing ambitions beyond launch services. The company wants to develop and operate data centers in orbit, joining a growing effort to move large-scale computing capacity into space.

Satellite internet could also benefit

Part of the new funding may support Blue Origin’s satellite internet network, which was revealed earlier this year. The project would rely on thousands of satellites to deliver data connectivity for enterprise, government and data center customers.

SpaceX IPO shapes investor backdrop

The fundraising effort comes shortly after SpaceX’s major IPO last month. The AI, data center and space company raised more than $85 billion at a $1.75 trillion valuation, setting a high-profile benchmark for investor interest in space infrastructure businesses.
